Improve the wettability of contact lenses.
Plasma is extensively used in the manufacture of contact lenses. In this application plasma is used to activate the lens material prior to subsequent coating, or to ablate the surface to expose an underlying surface layer. In both cases the application of plasma has replaced difficult, time consuming and costly wet chemical methods.
Glass molds used in opthalmic lens manufacturing become contaminated with a thin layer of lens polymer (e.g. CR-39 or PC), and/or mold release agents. Aqueous cleaning methods are often used to remove this residue. However, problems of incomplete rinsing, water spots, cleaning bath build-up, etc. can result in less than perfect surfaces. Plasma on the other hand can clean these lenses to pristine condition.
